General Info

Our next show will be ‘The Full Monty’ which will be performed from 20th to 25th September 2010 at Princes Hall, Aldershot. Rehearsals and auditions will take place at Velmead Junior School, Velmead Road, Fleet, Hampshire, GU52 7LG.

Auditions will take place on Sunday 25th April from 2pm – 6pm at Velmead Junior School. Please be aware that all adult non members are required to pay £5 audition fee and children non members £2.50 which will be deducted from your yearly subscription fee if your audition is successful. All full members who have allowed their subscription to lapse will be regarded as non members and so will be liable to the charge. There will be one, possibly two children required for this show and parents will be required to fill in a form giving consent for that child to audition. All adult non-members must also fill in an application form. These forms must be filled in prior to the audition and can be provided on request by the Secretary.

There is no chorus in the show but anyone wishing to join the society as a full member will be subject to a short singing audition which will take place at one of the early rehearsals - check the details above for dates. Non members auditioning for a non singing principal role will still have to be subject to a singing audition to become a member of the society.

If you wish to hire a score/libretto please bring your cheque book with you. Expect this to be anything up to £30. No cheque – no book. Your uncashed cheque will be returned to you at the end of rehearsal season on the safe return of your books.
You will be issued with a rehearsal schedule in due course.

Yours sincerely
Vanessa van Nieuwenhuijzen
Joint Secretary

Production Specific Information

Full details of audition material, dates and times see table below.

This musical play  is adapted from the 1997 film of the same name.  It is set in Buffalo, New York in the present time, and the book was written by Terrence McNally who made the relationships between the men and women more central to the plot.  He also let the gay relationship develop more than in the film.  It was decided that as a contemporary story was to be told, a Broadway score full of ballads and big chorus numbers, as in a more traditional show, was not what was needed, and so David Yazbek whose music was so original and humorous, was engaged to write the score.  The show opened on Broadway on October 26th 2000 and ran for 2 years.

The show is extremely well written, being both poignant and funny, and the music is modern and catchy.  It is set in Buffalo, New York, where the steelworks have recently been shut down making all the employees redundant.  The story revolves around 6 central steelworkers who are low on both cash and prospects.  They decide to present a strip act at a local club after seeing their wives and girlfriends enthusiasm for a touring company of the “Chippendales”.  As they prepare for the show, working through their fears, self-consciousness and anxieties, they overcome their inner demons and find strength in their camaraderie.

This show has many issues which this company has not addressed before, ie broken marriages, homosexuality, attempted suicide, nudity, to name but a few.  But it should be a crowd puller, having sold out in many venues around the country when performed by other AmDram societies.

As I have mentioned before, there is no chorus, and nowhere that it can be added, but it does have 50 named characters.  So 6 men (described later) are central to the plot, plus Nathan, Jerry's son who is 12 years old.  Also 3 women (Jerry's estranged wife Pam, Dave's wife Georgie, and Harold's wife Vicki) are also central to the plot, plus 4 or 5 girlfriends who appear frequently.  This version includes 2 extra characters, Buddy (Keno) Walsh, a male stripper and Jeanette Burmeister, the audition and rehearsal pianist, who being older, has seen it all!!

This makes something approaching 20 characters who cannot double as anyone else, leaving about 30 other characters who could be acted by about another 12 cast.  The production team are suggesting that the bulk of the show, with the main characters, is set by end of July approx, and then we would ask more people to join us and act the other smaller character parts during August and into September to complete the show.  This would mean the extras could have their summer free and then get involved for concentrated rehearsals toward the end.  Paul is preparing C.D.'s of the audition singing and dancing pieces, and these will be used in the auditions.  As he will be away in Australia until 2 days prior to the auditions, his deputy Graham Hix will help anyone with the music.  He, Sue and I will be at the first 2 rehearsals on Tues 13th and Thurs 15th April to discuss the show and hear some of the music.
For some of you who would like to audition but are worried about the 'naked' issue, there is no need to worry as this show does not have to go naked!  In reality the audience never get the chance to see anything, just like the film.  With stage lights off and a 'blinder' light shone in their faces, it is over in a flash – so to speak!  Just don't give the game away to our audiences.
